THE BING-CHATGPT MECHANISM.
When ChatGPT runs a web search, it does not query OpenAI's own index. It queries Bing's. When Claude runs a web search, it queries a mix of Bing and Brave. Perplexity has its own crawler but uses Bing as a secondary source. Of the four major AI surfaces, only Google AI Overviews uses Google's index by default.
The implication is uncomfortable: if you are not in the Bing index, three of the four AI surfaces are structurally biased against citing you. Not because they don't want to - because the lookup mechanism doesn't have you available to retrieve.
WHY MOST SITES ARE NOT IN BING.
From the 47-site research network plus broader audit work, the share of sites verified in Bing Webmaster Tools is below 60%. The share of sites with active sitemap submission to Bing is below 40%. The share with IndexNow integration is below 15%.
This gap exists for one reason: SEO discourse for the last decade has been Google-first. Bing was the optional-second-place engine. Most site owners never set it up. Now that ChatGPT and Claude depend on it, the gap is much more expensive than it was when Bing was just "the search engine you don't use."
BING WEBMASTER TOOLS SETUP.
The full setup is faster than most people expect:
- 1. Sign in at
www.bing.com/webmasterswith a Microsoft account. - 2. Add your site, verify with DNS TXT or meta tag (same flow as Google Search Console).
- 3. Submit your sitemap.xml. Bing accepts the same format as Google.
- 4. Enable IndexNow under Configure My Site. This is the protocol Bing uses to accept push notifications when content changes.
- 5. If you want Bing to import your Google Search Console data, link the two via the import feature in BWT (saves you re-doing keyword and indexation analysis).
INDEXNOW - THE PROTOCOL THAT MATTERS.
IndexNow is a push protocol jointly developed by Bing and Yandex. When you publish or update a page, you POST the URL to IndexNow's endpoint and Bing's index updates within minutes (rather than the normal hours-to-days lag). Yandex, Naver, and several smaller engines also accept IndexNow submissions.
For AI visibility, IndexNow is high-leverage: it shortens the lag between your content going live and ChatGPT being able to cite it. On the 47-site network, sites with IndexNow integration showed measurably faster time-to-first-citation than sites without.
Implementation is one HTTP request per published URL. Most CMSes (WordPress via plugin, Shopify, Ghost) have one-click IndexNow integration. Custom sites: write a 20-line POST handler that fires on publish.
BING-SPECIFIC QUIRKS.
Bing's index has different ranking signals than Google's. Things that work specifically well in Bing:
- Older domains rank disproportionately well (domain age weights more in Bing).
- Exact-match anchor text in inbound links matters more than in Google.
- Lower bar for keyword targeting; less algorithmic penalty for over-optimisation.
- Larger reliance on H1/H2 keyword presence (vs Google's more semantic interpretation).
- Faster indexation of newly-pushed content via IndexNow than Google's traditional crawl.
THE BOTTOM LINE.
If you do nothing else this quarter for AI visibility, set up Bing Webmaster Tools. Free, 30 minutes, single biggest swing in AI citation surface. Anyone telling you to spend money on "AI optimisation" before this baseline is in place is selling you the wrong thing.
